Main objective: The objective of FUN2CORK project is to provide cork coatings and fabrics produced by SEDACOR with relevant properties for its target sectors, namely improved fire and discoloration resistance, in conjunction with seamless integrated electroluminescent lighting.

Activities and expected/achieved results:

Main results:

The solutions developed within the scope of this project for the improvement of technical specifications of cork products for wall and textiles applications are settled on the additivation of cork-based products with functional materials, without changing the desired final properties, such as the aesthetical characteristics and touch. As for the seamless integration of electroluminescent lighting, cork coatings containing structurally modified electroluminescent devices were developed.

From the developed work resulted proofs of concept and prototypes which are currently being implemented in the company’s production cycle.

Project designation: CORK2SENSE – Development of Cork Stoppers with Low TCA Content and Yellowing

Main objective: The objective of CORK2SENSE project is the development of efficient and innovative solutions for application on cork stoppers, aiming to answer two problems inherent to their utilization at alcoholic beverages bottling, namely wine contamination by TCA and the yellowing of beverages of high-alcoholic strength by polyphenolic compounds.

Activities and expected/achieved results:

 

Main results:

The solutions developed within the scope of this project for the elimination of TCA and polyphenolic compounds effects in the organoleptic properties of alcoholic beverages settled on the incorporation of inclusion agents into cork stoppers for significative reduction of these compounds, that migrate to the alcoholic beverage, without changing the desired final properties. Throughout the project, it was possible to develop and characterize materials with activity and capacity to reduce the contaminant compounds in the concentration ranges of interest, and to integrate them in cork stoppers using traditional techniques of the cork industry.

From the developed work resulted proofs of concept that were implemented with success within the company’s production cycle, prototypes were developed, which performance was posteriorly validated.
